Why This Name Was Chosen (November 25, 2018)

D’oh.

Thought
I was being smart
And unique
Spelling my name
T...h...e...r...i...s...a.

But
Two other women
Have beaten me
To that claim.

One
A Canadian
And the other
An American.

Seriously
There never was
Another choice
For my female name.

In honouring
My parents’ selection
Had I been born
In the proper body.

My birth name honours
One of dad’s brothers
Who died
Before my birth
In my aunt’s arms.

Although
I don’t know
Why Theresa
(Or variation of it)
Was chosen.

As no female relative
On either side
Is named thus.

Author’s note: Some levetity, after a stressful Saturday. Sadly, my mom can’t say or write my name.

So much history is bound up in each one of our names, whether we know it or not. Thanks for this exploration and explanation of yours. Have a Merry Christmas!

Names are interesting--how we take them and transform them or don't. It was odd for me the first time I encountered mine in the wild...my mom had always said they made mine up and seeing it apart from me was...weird.

Yes Therisa - bold writing as ever and for sure elements of your name are still to play out... We all carry such a legacy to make of what we will. Best Wishes on this, your journey...

Sad that your mom wont say your name. Sigh. I like the spelling with an I. I had not encountered it before. I am just now remembering that my confirmation name was Theresa. I had forgotten. After the "Little Flower".

To chose you own name... somehow I would think everyone should be entitled that... but it's so sad when it's not accepted by your mother.

A name, unlike the well-known rose, is not a name is not a name is not (just) a name. The other might share the spelling (the same is true of a few others, when it comes to my own name), but you are the only Therisa in you. And it fits you: familiar and different, fun and yours.

Ah, you are lucky to be able to choose your own name; and a beautiful name it is indeed.

So, Therisa, the rebirth name, wisely is new to your family and unique. Sharing it with only 2 women is a rarity. I mean, I am Susan--can't even count the number of those. I hope you have holiday plans that will leave you happy and content. See you next year.
