Today
The world joins New Zealand
Mourning of 49 citizens
(And possibly more people
Who's wounds prove fatal)
Senselessly murdered
By a radical fanatic.
I refuse
To give this monster
Any more power
In speaking his name
Or sharing physical evidence
From this preplanned massacre.
Although
Among the people
Who share similar views
Will praise him
As another martyr
For the cause.
Rather
I do this
In honouring
All victims of similar fate
Religious and secular.
Whether
They've young children
Too innocent
To know about such hate.
Or
Elderly worshipers
With their grandchildren
Who've seen the evil
Hate can inflict
On others.
Knowing
Venues popular
With the LGBTQ+ community
Could've been primary targets
Instead of the mosques.
I offer
My heartfelt condolences
To the people of New Zealand
And the families
Who've lost loved ones
In these senseless killings.
Hoping
We can start
The healing process
So badly needed
Right now.

Author’s note: Written after learning of the Christchurch shootings, which killed 50 Muslim worshipers and left many dozen wounded. At the time of writing, there were 49 confirmed murder victims.
