Outside
My apartment window
I did hear
A murder of crow
Crawing
So mournfully.
In signalling
The doom
Of someone
Nearby.
Never realizing
That person
Was someone
Who I knew.
As I turned on
The clock radio
To listen to
The noontime news.
When
The truth
Hit me.
Rob Ford
The former mayor
And city councillor
Of Toronto
Is dead
From cancer.
Sudden outburst
From outside
Broke the spell
I found myself
Under.
Looking out
A stranger is
Using a broom
To scatter
This murder of crows.
In believing
The Celtic belief
About Crow
Being the harbinger
Of death.

Personally, I despite everything that Rob Ford, stood for, political, and as, a human being. But, he tried his best, to make Toronto, a better city, during his time, in office, as an elected official. For me, he will be remembered, as the first sitting Mayor of Toronto, openly rejected all invitations, from Pride Toronto, to be involve, with Toronto's annual celebration of the LGBT+ community, during Pride Week (last full week of June). Harbinger of death... yes those flocks of crows can be a harbinger... they look so much so... I had only heard of Rob Ford more on his war on bicyclists... so I'm not surprised.
Powerfully expressed!
Thank you, Sanaa. What to write something, about the Brussels bombings, but couldn't find the right words, to go, with my mood, today.
Sadly, Bjorn, he was worse, on streetcars and transit buses. He wanted everything buried underground, and the city to built subways, only, which cost more and take longer to get operational.
I see that you are also another Canadian in the bloggerworld ~
It was a shock to read the news, but I am not a fan of Rob Ford ~ Love the way you used the crow as a symbol of death ~
Thanks for joining us ~
Thank you, Grace. Listening the various news reports of the past few weeks, am not surprise that Rob Ford died. Sadly, it was just a question of time, before he was granted, his release, from the suffering. Personally, I wouldn't wish cancer, on anyone.
He was a controversial figure to be sure. I liked your reference to Celtics beliefs. My mom awoke early one morning to the sound of flapping wings, signifying a death in our Irish family....they followed her down the hall. Later that morning, one of her office mates was murdered at their place of work.
Crows as a harbinger of death...there is such gorgeous foreboding in this. Well done.
Thank you, Sherry, they were one among many that I could have choice. Guess, as I wrote this, I was thinking about the film, "The Crow", which Brandon Lee died so tragically, during its filming. Awesome soundtrack, too.
Thank you, De, for providing the inspiration, which helped me, in writing this.
My pleasure! I am loving everybody's poems so much!
You really took an original approach to this prompt, Therisa! I liked the symbolic way you used the 'crow,' and I can definitely understand why you were not a fan of him as mayor!
Yes, De's prompt has garnered lots of lovely & lyrical poetics; in BC the owl can call your name, heralding death, but seeing a white raven reverses it. Crows are so intelligent, it's pity they're feathered like undertakers & harbingers. Imagine them with yellow chests & red stripes in their wings, & white heads.
I liked that your poem took a dark turn...it was fun to read and realize how many people are superstitious about so many things. But a "murder" of crows...now just who thought of that?

What is is about crows? They really can set one to brooding, no? Excellent write. You feel the mood build.
I was surprised to hear of Rob Ford's passing. I like that you have taken to bird prompt a step beyond just describing the bird. I also like the onion and knife picture at the top, making us wonder for a moment just who is involved in this "murder."
This reminds me of the crows that have taken up residency in my neighbourhood. Some days their cawing leaves me with such an eerie feeling of doom.
As a fellow Canadian, I was not a Rob Ford fan either, but you have been respectful in this piece and in your comments.
Crows as harbinger of death.......Not knowing this man other than the bellicose news I read....I connect here with your poem in a different way. The death by cancer....trying to scatter the crows with the broom...doing battle to rid this world of this murderer who sneaks into bodies...too many deaths from this vile disease.
Harbinger
of death
human
comes
crows
pared
human way..:)
