In my mind
James is playing
Getting Away With It
(All Messed Up).
As I sit
On my bed
Trying to
Figure out.
Where did I make
That wrong turn
On the freeway
Called life.
Could've sworn
Overhead sign said
Next turn right
For true happiness.
As Princess Di’s
Faerie tale romance
Crumbles to dust
Before a watching world.
No Princess Charming
Is standing
With her magical kiss
At the bedside.
To heal the heartaches
Or bandage the wounds
Affecting our souls
By love gone wrong.
In this impossible dream
We weave around our souls
Searching for everlasting love
Between two people.
As Princess Di’s
Faerie tale romance
Crumbles to dust
Before a watching world.
Taking away my heart
Some cheap trinket
To be discarded
At your whimsical pleasure.
Not caring
About my pain
Or me
You f--king bitch.
In stealing
My hopes and dreams
I shared with you
For the future.
As Princess Di’s
Faerie tale romance
Crumbles to dust
Before a watching world.

Author’s note: I blame James for this lyrical poem/pop song creation.

The breakup and reference to pop culture is an inspired take... love the reference to princess Di
The refrains, the repeating of the Princess Di stanza, creates a chorus, and the poem succeeds as a ballad, a pop song. I can hear the Carole King piano music in the background, in the air. I got a little lost with /the fucking bitch/ stanza. Who's is saying it to whom? Is James a woman?
James, is an alternative band, from Manchester, England, who write catchy tunes. They have been on the music scene, since the mid-1980s. As for that particular stanza, the protagonist is speaking to her former lover, Glenn.
Oh my aching heart.. this is beautifully poignant, Therisa!
Sorry there are no Prince Charming or Princess to live happily ever after. Such a let down but reality bites.
humans are creatures of extremes and a creature harmed you in her cruelty
The signage in our lives cannot always be trusted. Love is a gamble.
I like the pop song vibe. A refreshing style to read.
The repetition and references to popular culture are very effective and give this poem a time frame. I like the question ‘Where did I make / That wrong turn / On the freeway / Called life’ and ‘Princess Charming…With her magical kiss’.
Wrong turns. I've taken my share of them.
I'm also enjoying the Princess Di refrains. And thinking - perhaps the voice of this poem didn't take a wrong turn, but was driven there, then rudely left behind.
I can see the James influence. The refrain enhances the pop sensibility of this one!
Ahhh... this is very good!!
