City Painted Blue (July 10, 2018)

Fascist police patrol
Strict rules community
Everything has a place
And place for everything.

Everywhere
One looks
Devoid of garbage
Or homeless people.

Sterile cityscape
Uninspired crumbling buildings
Flashing neon signs
Great Dealmaker’s name
Fill skyline.

People move
Like silent drones
Drab coloured clothes
From one building
To another.

Never glancing around
Instilled culture of fear
By ruling elite
With their mother's milk.

Defiance is
One way ticket
For reeducation
Disappearing forever.

Nightlife
Daily mandatory bonfire meetings
Praising Great Dealmaker
And his wisdom.

Unexplained
Or unsatisfactory reasons
Another reeducation trip.

Otherwise
Public spaces are
Silent gloomy tombs
Absent life.

Despite official encouragement
Population steadily declines
Back alleyway clinics grow
Coathangers displayed.

Stoic community
Awaiting deathblow.

Author’s note:  Written for this week’s Poets United midweek motif word prompt: city. A bleak dystopian future city with a Trump-like leader. In Canada, conservative parties are represented by the colour blue.

"Everything has a place / And place for everything."...Wow! This reads like an adage. And there is a great dealmaker in every country. Ugh.

It is bleak and speaks of fear for the future.

...or perhaps now.

This, unfortunately could be all our futures Therisa. We are moving towards it...

Sumana, I do think it's an adage, which felt right, when I placed it in the opening stanza.

For both, Annell. Especially, I see what happening in the U.S. and the election of Doug Ford, as Premier of Ontario.

Therisa's World said...

I hope, Anna, we're both wrong for everyone sake.

You paint a picture in which defiance is senseless, and the deathblow is near. Will this be a novel someday?

"Defiance is
One way ticket
For reeducation
Disappearing forever."

Gah, with Ford elected, this is not so far in the future, we may be already there. Well said, Therisa. So good to see you writing!

Susan, am generally a person, who expects the worse, but hopes for the best. Only if someone ghostwrites for me. Have trouble processing languages due to my learning disabilities.

Therisa's World said...

Thank you, Sherry. So do hope, this is an extreme dystopian worldview that never happens.

It is bleak, but written brilliantly. I to hope it never happens.

Sadly, the recently elected Progressive Conservative government, in Ontario, has repealing or revoking legislation that would have dealt with global warming, holding police more accountable for their actions and progressive, in the way sex education is taught, like age appropriate language for body parts. So yes, the signs are here. Just a question, do we move regressively into the darkness.

Seems to be the direction in which so many countries are moving.. unbelievable but true!

I have to go now and catch my breath, dust off my optimistic outlook, and carry on!

Thanks Thot. Sadly, the disease of nationalism is spreading faster than the flu bug, these days.

Sorry, Bev, for the darkness of today's posting, but optimism is overdrawn at the bank, with President Trump and Premier Ford (in Ontario). Next week will be a lot brighter. I promise.
