A Poetic Letter To Australia (January 3, 2020)

Dear Australia;

In your time of need
You're not alone
Battling these wildfires
On your eastern coast.

Over the years
Australia has
Generously helped
Battled forest fires
In Canada.

Only wish
It was possible
To ship Lake Ontario's
Excess water.

As this freshwater
Will be released
Into the Atlantic Ocean
From the St Lawrence Seaway.

Else
Send RCN resources
If asked
Evacuating trapped citizens.

But
I don't expect
PM Morrison will do so
Given his government
Handling of this crisis.

May the Goddess'
Healing mercy
Rest on those
Facing this Herculean task
Before your nation.

As Morrison displays
His inability to lead
In a time of national crisis
With his lack of comprehension
To Australia's specific needs
And global warming.

One Australian death
Is one
Too many.

From a sincere
And thankful
Canadian.

This is a loud local national voice reaching a hand out to another which has readily offered help in the past. Maybe the ministers can't find the words, but we can. Thanks.

This is so heartwarming, Therisa. Have you thought of posting this on facebook so maybe those in Australia might find it more easily? I am discouraged that we have so many climate crisis deniers in positions of "leadership" (not that they are leading us anywhere but over the edge of the cliff.) Reading this made me feel better. It is good to know that good hearts care about what is happening. Somehow we have to translate caring into insisting governments address climate crisis. Letters from citizens to every level of government cant be ignored, especially if they come in big numbers. I think of contacting newspapers across Canada in letters to the editor to try to start a groundswell of insistence and resistance to our government of forked tongues.

Thank you Therisa. It's good to know we have Canadian support. I have put your poem on my blog. Hope you don't mind.
