Girl's Best Friend (November 24, 2009)

Friends shouldn't part
On such sour note
Never to have contact
Again.

No matter
What we wish.

Sigh.

You're always there
For me.

Celebrating
My life's high points:
Birthday parties
Trips to Dairy Queen
A stunning sunset
After a beautiful day
At the beach.

So many great memories.

Until
One August afternoon
A secret meeting
Between us.

Ending
On a bitter note
Forever dooming
Our relationship.

Wish
It wasn't so.

But reality says
Otherwise
For me.

Now
Death is
By Chocolate.

Author's note: Another poem, from my poetic morgue. This time exploring my extreme food allergy that I have caffeine, through the lens of chocolate, which has become, my bitter enemy.

Oh, it is hard indeed to be allergic to Chocolate! I love the way the opening and closing lines frame the journey.

Oh no. That is tragic! I don't know which would be worse: losing a true friend, or losing chocolate. :)

Don't you just hate it when something you love is also deadly?

Yikes! It really is like losing a friend. I also read your comment on Magaly's post about how many years it's been since you've had chocolate and cannot fathom what that must be like.

Oh I so much feel for you.. coffee and chocolate should be your friends...

Pity they can't make decaffeinated chocolate as they do coffee! I cannot imagine life without chocolate. No wonder your poetry is, as you say, often sad!

You expressed this so well, Therisa. It would be hard to be allergic to caffeine in any form!

I love chocolate so much that I find this to be one of the saddest poems I've read. It would break my addicted heart to have to part from chocolate.
Nice writing!

Chocolate does unspeakable things to my insides. I can have a bit, once or thrice a year... must take a pill first. I feel terrible that you can't even taste it. When I eat my bit this year (I've been saving it for my anniversary), I will appreciate it more... and I will think of you. I hope there are other things you can enjoy.

You know, many of my friends ask me how I can stand it... not being able to eat so many things I was able to enjoy some years back. And I tell them that it could be worse. Not that I'm celebrating your restrictions, I'm just grateful that you share them... I think it might help others appreciate their blessings. I lost the ability to drive safely about three years ago. It's terrible not to be able to drive myself places, after having had a car for decades. But you know what? I can still walk. And that's wonderful.

We both can't have a handful of foods, because of an ingredient or three... But you know what? We can still eat (and use the facilities) on our own. I have friends who can't. Let us appreciate what we have, even if we yearn for what we lost.

Am sorry, Magaly, about your body's reaction to chocolate. I can have chocolate, but need to use an Epipen, and then rush myself, to a hospital, afterwards, as my body goes, into anaphylactic shock, from the caffeine, much the same way, I do for wasp and hornet stings.

Am very lucky, since I gave up my driver licence, last year, I get around Toronto, on the TTC. In some cases, it's easier to travel this way, without needing to find parking spots, for a car.

Sadly, I have to be careful, of those medications, which have caffeine, in them, whether they be, over the counter, or prescription painkillers, for one. Still, am able to live life, even if, I do dearly miss chocolate.

Thank you, Magaly, for sharing and being so positive, when it's easy to live life, negatively.

You will rise again w/o the chocolate.

Commiserations on the chocolate allergy. No matter who we are something or someone doesn't like us. (I assume TTC is Toronto public transport?)

Oh, what a terrible allergy to have! I fervently pray I never get that one. And also I MUST have my espresso coffee first thing every morning.
