The Caged Bird (May 11, 2016)

Behind
These gilded bars
Of a golden cage
You keep me
As your canary bird.

In the mistaken belief
You're protecting
A fragile
And weak creature.

Expecting me
To be
Your little bird
Of happiness.

Warbling
Sweet melodies
Of love.

Never mind
My soul is
Filled with sad songs
Of the blues.

As depression
Sets in.

Wishing
To spread out
My wings.

Upon
A gentle Spring breeze
With the other birds
In finding
My true love.

Instead
My emaciated body
Barely
Hangs there
Upon the perch.

Waiting for
Death's arrival
And release.

Knowing
You'll never understand
Why I need this
Mom.

Ai Yi Yi! Protective love can be a double edged sword, and your extended metaphor expresses it well. In stanza three, did you intend "expecting"?

It is hard when others want us to live according to their expectations - impossible to do, a price too high to pay. I resonate with "in the mistaken belief you are protecting a fragile and weak creature." People are astonished to discover how strong we really are. Great poem, Therisa.

I do hope the bird finds a voice to sing again.

Moms should watch the birds encourage their chicks to leave the nest and do their own thing once they are fledged. We choose our own life once that happens.

Sometimes people fail to see what we need however loud we sing - that hurts so much - beautifully written..

Thank you, Hannah, sadly, it goes beyond this, to the point of her, being transphobic, towards me, her eldest child.

Thank you, Susan, for catching my typo, have problems seeing them, as a result of my learning disabilities. It wasn't protective love, it was suffocating love, which I did everything her, or else.

Thank you, Sanaa, only wish, I wasn't writing, from personal experience.

Thank you, Sherry. Get so frustrated and angry, when I think about the wasted years, I surrendered myself, to her selfish needs.

This is very sad. Yes, a bird is meant to fly and not feel caged. I hope you find your way & gain that freedom within your heart.

Slowly, I am, Mary. The first huge step, was moving to Toronto, from the 'burbs. Even though, I had spend time, at homeless shelter, I gained more than I lost.

A thoughtful piece, solemn like grey clouds in silent procession. Greetings and best wishes.
